Free Resources for Tax Season 2022 Near Washington, DC

Tax season 2022 is upon us! For many in the National Capital Area, it can be a confusing time. There are many questions on how to file taxes correctly, which tax credits apply to each individual and their families, when to expect refunds and much more. Through United Way of the National Capital Area’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, community members can receive free tax assistance and preparation.

VITA is tax counseling for community members who need it most. Through the VITA program, IRS-certified VITA tax volunteers provide free, basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. VITA can be accessed by most community members but eligibility and credit amount depends on your income, family size and other factors.

If you earn less than $57,000 annually, you may be eligible for low-income tax assistance and qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC helps low- to moderate-income workers and their families get a tax break. A tax credit usually means more money in your pocket because it reduces the amount of tax you owe, resulting in a bigger refund. The EITC is an important tool in lifting community members out of poverty.

United Way NCA’s five Financial Empowerment Centers (FECs) throughout the National Capital Area offer VITA services and more throughout tax season and beyond. Find more information on our FECs below.
