United Way’s Women United program is a powerful global network of over 70,000 women leaders across 165 communities and six countries committed to making positive change for their communities and the world. The members of United Way of the National Capital Area’s Women United work together to create lasting impact in our local community, especially for the women and children of the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population.
The ALICE population represents over 500,000 households in our region—families who earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but still cannot meet the basic cost of living. That translates to approximately 1.4 million adults and children who are struggling to make ends meet. Women United is committed to serving this population by supporting initiatives that help reduce disparities and promote equity in health, education, and economic mobility.
Over the years, Women United has focused on initiatives such as advocating for young women in middle school and beyond, empowering women through economic mobility education, and mentoring the next generation of women leaders. By coming together, Women United members have been recognized for their exceptional ability to create positive, lasting change in the community.
United Way NCA’s Women United are centering their investment and volunteer efforts on reducing barriers to education and economic opportunity for the women and children of the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population in our region. Women United are focused on two key initiatives:
Menstrual Equity and Education: We aim to ensure that all students—regardless of their financial situation—have access to the menstrual products they need. By participating in Women United, you help provide these critical resources to students at schools across the region.
College and Career Pathways: Women United is dedicated to empowering students by helping them explore and prepare for different pathways to career and college success. We believe in providing equitable access to the tools, resources, and experiences necessary for students to thrive and reach their full potential.
