Our Commitment to Building a Healthy Community

United Way NCA’s Healthy Community programs expand access to health resources that promote physical and mental well-being for our ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) neighbors and other underserved community members. We work to remove systemic barriers to food security, support physical activity and healthy eating, provide mental health education and services, and reduce the stigma of seeking care.

Many of us take health for granted—we have access to care, information, and resources that help us stay well. For too many in our region, that’s not the reality. Often, the emergency room is their only option for care, and by then it can be too late. Better health means a better life. That’s why United Way NCA is improving access to health care and resources in our communities to achieve equity for all.

We make strong, strategic investments in programs that ensure adults and children have access to the health services they need, not only to be well, but to thrive. Good health and nutrition are critical to a young person’s ability to learn and to a family’s long-term economic opportunity. We are also leading efforts to destigmatize mental health by educating the region on available services, increasing access to therapeutic support, and providing mental health first aid training. United Way NCA will continue to champion equitable public policies and programs that support the health and wellness of our community’s children and families.

What We’re Doing Through Our Healthy Community Programs

United Way NCA is focused on improving every aspect of health for all community members in the National Capital Area. Explore how we are increasing health equity in our region:

Thrive United 365

Thrive United 365 is committed to providing equitable access to and the distribution of health resources that improve the well-being of those in our community by addressing health conditions that most affect our ALICE neighbors.

We leverage trust and relationships within the community to create health resource access points with the lowest possible barriers. Thrive United 365 focuses on chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, mental health, and emerging public health concerns such as COVID-19.

We are proud to serve underserved communities that traditionally face barriers to quality health care by providing safe, trusted health resources, including prevention and care management. Our work enables communities to become healthier.

How You Can Help Advance Healthcare Accessibility in Our Community

Volunteers are a vital part of United Way NCA’s mission to improve health access and outcomes in our community. Whether it’s assembling weekend hunger backpacks, supporting mental health education, or helping connect families to critical resources, volunteers make a direct impact on the health and well-being of those who need it most. By giving their time, skills, and passion, volunteers help advance health equity and create lasting change across the National Capital Area.
