United Way NCA’s hosts 8th Annual Do More 24 With a Focus On An Equitable Recovery for the National Capital Area

On May 5th, United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) is syncing up its Do More 24 efforts with #GivingTuesdayNow – a global movement of generosity in this unprecedented time of need. This year for Do More 24, United Way NCA is focused on promoting the health, education, and financial stability of our community through programs like Project Homeless Connect (PHC) – our one-stop-shop resource fair for our neighbors at risk of or experiencing homelessness to access a multitude of much-needed resources.
Long before COVD-19, far too many families in the region were challenged by the cost of living outpacing what they earn. When funds run short, cash-strapped households are forced to make impossible choices, such as deciding between quality childcare or paying the rent, filling a prescription or fixing the car. Now with increased and prolonged unemployment, individuals and families are further burdened leading to long-term consequences.
As we look ahead beyond the pandemic and the economic impact, United Way NCA is tasked with thinking critically about equitable solutions for the region it serves. United Way NCA must focus its attention on healing and ensuring that everyone can see themselves as part of the long-term solution.
That is where programs like Project Homeless Connect come in. This year United Way NCA is expanding the services at Project Homeless Connect to include workforce, recruitment, and career development and connecting vulnerable individuals and families with jobs, health services, and economic assistance.
“The inequities in the region started well before COVID-19,” shares Vice President of Community Impact, Dirk Butler of United Way NCA. “The challenges in this region— they’re going to take investment; they’re going to take coordination to help us stand in the gap to address the needs in the region.”
