Making A Direct Impact in Our Community
Rajeev Singh wants to make a direct impact in our community. That’s why he invests in United Way NCA.
“To me, it makes a lot of sense to help organizations that are local,” says Rajeev. “Being local, being in the community and being able to participate is a big deal to me. Being able to see where my donated dollars are going and how they are helping is important.”
Lately, Rajeev, who is the father of a young child, had been wondering what he could do to directly help people in our community. “I’ve been thinking about where we are, especially with the job situation and the economy. Although we live in a relatively affluent area, I see people who struggle. It’s been on my mind to choose where to start.”
He started by volunteering with our one-day resource fair Project Homeless Connect, which served nearly 300 people in our community who are people experiencing homelessness.
“I saw all sorts of people. There were young people looking for employment and information about social services, and there were older people who really needed help: medical services and social security cards,” he says.
Volunteering with us also gave Rajeev the chance to put a face to our organization. “An organization is made up of people, and I was more than happy to see the people who are United Way,” says Rajeev.
Working at Project Homeless Connect allowed Rajeev the opportunity to meet other volunteers who care deeply about our community, and he started to see how we can all come together to create large-scale change.
“I’ll go on the train or walk in the streets and see these people who are in dire straits. If you help them and they’re able to stand up on their own feet, there will be less people in need. It will be a more efficient and more productive society and healthier and happier,” says Rajeev. “There’s a lot of intelligence and a lot of knowledge and a lot of people who are willing to help.”
