#GivingTuesdayNow Raises Nearly $2 Million For Washington D.C Metro Nonprofits

WASHINGTON, DC, May 8, 2020 – Three of the region’s largest giving days synced up efforts on #GivingTuesdayNow, a global movement for generosity as a response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19 and generated nearly $2 million for hundreds of nonprofits in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Specifically, United Way of The National Capital Area’s (United Way NCA) Do More 24, Catalogue for Philanthropy’s GiveLocalTogether and Community Foundation of Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties’ GiveChoose Campaigns succeeded in bringing attention, raising awareness and providing financial assistance to help nonprofits in the region facing increased demand during this crisis.

Collectively, nearly 13,000 donors contributed to more than 450 organizations serving the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, including Loudoun and Northern Fauquier counties and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland. Through the three online giving portals, donors were able to search for and connect with nonprofits serving the critical needs of the community.

Even before the COVID-19 crisis, far too many families in the region were challenged by the cost of living outpacing what they earn. When funds run short, cash-strapped households are forced to make impossible choices, such as deciding between quality childcare or paying the rent, filling a prescription, or fixing the car. These short-term decisions have long-term consequences and these nonprofits needed this added support during this time.

“Together we want to thank donors who gave from their hearts with donations large and small to come together during a time when we are physically apart,” said United Way NCA President and CEO Rosie Allen-Herring. “The outpouring of generosity from so many civic-minded citizens in this region during this time of great need is extraordinary and inspiring. This day truly mobilized the DMV to support their neighbors in this time of crisis.” 

“We know that we need community more now than ever, despite physical distancing. And our community showed up and rallied around local nonprofits this past Tuesday in a truly exciting and generous way,” noted Aaron Gonzales, Co-Executive Director at the Catalogue for Philanthropy. “Nonprofits already played a vital role in our community before COVID-19, and their impact now is even more urgent as they fill critical roles in our response today and our coming recovery. So thank you to our whole community, for giving local and giving together.”
