Exelon and West Monroe partnered July 16 with United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) to pack hundreds of job readiness kits.

The event was part of West Monroe’s Annual National Day of Service.

“We get to partner with amazing companies like Exelon and West Monroe to really further our impact,” United Way NCA Director of Corporate Partnerships Nadine Ferlazzo said. “Everybody coming together, putting aside time in their day to have an opportunity to give back, it’s everything. It’s what United Way is built on.”

In all, dozens of volunteers packed 500 job readiness kits, complete with notebooks, pens, breath mints, tissues, and other essentials job-seekers may need.

“Every year, we’ve been packing something a little bit different. This year, it’s to benefit people who are just getting back into the workforce,” Exelon’s Jeffery Cormier said. “United Way makes it really easy to participate. You just tell them you want to help. Then they’ll order everything and have it delivered (to us).”

The job readiness kits also feature hand-written encouragement cards. The kits were distributed to United Way NCA’s network of five Financial Empowerment Centers (FECs). Our FECs provide financial coaching, budget counseling, and free tax services to help people clear debt, build credit, and pave a secure path toward generational wealth.

“Giving back to the community is awesome. Being able to put my laptop down just for a couple hours, you get to interact with cool folks,” Stanley Ko of West Monroe said. “It’s awesome to be surrounded by my fellow colleagues and we’re all in it together.”

“We’re very excited to have our community partners and corporate partners come together to make an impact,” Ferlazzo said. “Our corporate partners are everything to us. From doing kit packs like this, to supporting us financially, to running employee giving campaigns, they really allow United Way to go out into the community and have the impact we have.”
