The 72nd annual DC One Fund campaign is officially underway. On Oct. 7, District government employees, agency impact coordinators, and nonprofit partners gathered at the Marion S. Barry Jr. Building to launch this year’s workplace giving campaign. Within about an hour of the giving site opening, employees had already given more than $10,000.

The DC One Fund gives District government employees a simple way to support neighbors in need through payroll deduction or a one-time gift.

“Each of you is a key person in this campaign,” 72nd DC One Fund Chair Jim Slattery expressed to the room as he reflected on the amazing impact the DC One Fund has had over the years.

Last campaign year, District employees raised over $1 million to support the neighbors and community we call home.

“What you do is not ordinary, and every day, it keeps our city moving,” United Way NCA’s Chief External Affairs and Transformation Officer Dr. Nicole Cooper highlighted to the room.

Cooper spoke about the rising cost of food, childcare, medical expenses, transportation, and rent across the region, spotlighting much of United Way NCA’s work focuses on ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households: people who work, sometimes two or three jobs, but still can’t afford everyday necessities.

Every DC One Fund gift helps local nonprofits meet those needs, including the partners United Way NCA works with across the region.

Before the day ended, 71st DC One Fund Chair Jed Ross left District employees with a simple challenge: “Ask three colleagues who haven’t given yet to give $1 per pay period or make a one-time $26 gift. Then ask each of them to ask three more people.”

Ross also encouraged impact coordinators to sit down with colleagues and walk them through the giving email in person.

From impact coordinators to first-time donors, every District employee has a role in this year’s campaign. Together, their gifts help local nonprofits meet urgent needs and support neighbors across the community we share.
