United Way of the National Capital Area celebrates the
extraordinary generosity of our Tocqueville Donors!
United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA) is pleased to celebrate our Tocqueville donors at every turn, be it through our Tocqueville Celebration of Appreciation, special recognition ceremonies, or exclusive events that local businesses offer to Tocqueville Society members. All of our galas, receptions, and special affairs are entirely underwritten by generous community contributors. In 2008, our partners included:
Bank of America
Andre and Bethany Carter
Capital File Magazine
Covington & Burling, LLP
DC Magazine
Doyle New York
PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC
Saks Fifth Avenue
Whole Foods
Here’s how UWNCA honored its donors in 2008:
2008 WANT IT!

On September 10, 2008, Saks Fifth Avenue hosted a private fashion presentation that showcased major trends and UWNCA’s LIVE UNITED community campaign.
A PRIVATE RECEPTION FOR FRIDA BURLING: CELEBRATING SEVEN DECADES OF SERVICE
United Way of America, United Way’s national office, honored Frida Burling, the “G-dmother of Georgetown,” with special recognition for her extraordinary service to United Way. On November 14, 2008, UWNCA honored Frida at a private reception at Blake Hall. Special thanks go to President Barack Obama for recognizing Frida’s contributions to the Greater Washington Region!
UNITED WAY MILLION DOLLAR ROUNDTABLE
Frida Burling was honored for her seven decades of service at a private luncheon at the United Nations on November 20, 2008. This luncheon was part of United Way of America’s (UWA’s) Global Engagement and Donor Recognition Event for its Million Dollar Roundtable members.
A TOCQUEVILLE CELEBRATION OF APPRECIATION
On December 12, 2008, Chris Simmons, Chair of UWNCA’s Tocqueville Society, inducted new members at the Canadian Embassy. This event attracted an over-capacity crowd of 150, quite a feat on a Friday night during the festive holiday season!
HELPING WASHINGTONIANS REALIZE THEIR PHILANTHROPIC DREAMS
A unique aspect of UWNCA’s Tocqueville Society is its ability to work with major donors and prospects to fulfill their personal charitable goals. Last fall, Redskins Defensive End Andre Carter and his wife Bethany partnered with UWNCA to host a fitness boot camp for 25 youth from the YMCA Calomiris Program Center in Northeast DC. Andre’s teammates Antwaan Randle El, Leigh Torrance, and Rocky McIntosh led the youth through a one-hour workout and Bethany taught them the importance of healthy eating.
